November 3, 2015 : Tour on Lake Tanganyika Coastline

On 3rd November 2015, officials from the Ministry of Water, Environment, Territory Management and Urban Planning, accompanied by the Executive Director of the Lake Tanganyika Authority and the Director of Environment within the Lake Tanganyika Authority, conducted a visit on the coastline of Lake Tanganyika and the rivers flowing into Lake Tanganyika namely, Kanyonsha and Ntahangwa rivers.
According to the Assistant of the Minister of Water, Environment, Territory Management and Urban Planning, the purpose of the visit was to check if the training and awareness-raising given to the population on the Water Code, especially on Article 5 have had positive effects as regards Lake Tanganyika protection.

The Lake Tanganyika Authority was associated by the Government of Burundi to see the activities that are carried out on Lake Tanganyika. Unfortunately, the situation that was noticed was very bad as buildings are anarchically erected in protected areas without any compliance with the buffer zone requirements; in addition, all kinds of waste are thrown on the banks of the Lake and in its tributaries. All these activities threaten the general environment of Lake Tanganyika.

Questioned about actions to fight against this scourge, the Assistant of the Minister of Water, Environment, Territory Management and Urban Planning said that authorities are going to work in collaboration with the local government to take appropriate action including demolition of premises erected in violation of the law. He added that the Government alone cannot succeed without the support of the entire population and that is why he urged everyone to help in this fight against pollution of the Lake Tanganyika.
