Great Lakes Initiative Meeting

The office of the United States of America Special Envoy for the African Great Lakes and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), H.E. Russ D. Feingold, in collaboration with the Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) organised a kick-off meeting of the Great Lakes Initiative which was held at Lake Tanganyika Hotelin Kigoma, Tanzania on 2-4 February 2015. The meeting linked Scientists, Academics and Policy Makers from the North American Great Lakes with counterparts from the African Great Lakes to address sustainable management of trans-boundary lakes. The kick-off meeting was designed to serve as an information exchange and means to identify priority areas for future collaborative efforts. The meeting was attended by 48 participants, including the Special Envoy for the African Great Lakes and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the LTA Executive Director, Eng. NIBIRABTIJE Jean-Marie.

The kick-off meeting started on 2nd February 2015 with an Evening Welcome Reception where statements were given by the Executive Director of the Lake Tanganyika Authority, the Acting Regional Commissioner of Kigoma Region, who is also the Regional Administrative Secretary of Kigoma Region, Eng. Dr.J.S. Ndunguru, and concluded by the Special Envoy for the African Great Lakes and the Democratic Republic of Congo.On 3-4 February 2015, the meeting received presentations from representatives of both the North American Great Lakes and the African Great Lakes on issues concerning Strengthening of Conventions and Protocols, Stresses on Fisheries, Controlling Invasive Weeds, Protection of Watershed and Catchment Areas, Pollution Control, Eco-tourism, and Role of Academic Institutions in the Study and Management of African and North American Great Lakes, followed by plenary discussions.The meeting was later divided into three breakout sessions to come-up with issues that should be considered for future collaborations between the African and North American Great Lakes. The meeting was closed on 4th February 2015 with statements from the LTA Executive Director and Special Envoy for the African Great Lakes and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Acting Regional Commissioner of Kigoma Region took the opportunity to give a special present to the Special Envoy for the African Great Lakes and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), H.E. Russ D. Feingold.
