This Friday, 20 February 2026 in Kigoma, United Republic of Tanzania, the Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) and the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) for a renewable period of five years, the purpose of which is to enhance transboundary water governance and protect the ecosystems of Lakes Tanganyika and Victoria.

This MoC was supported by GIZ as part of implementation of the TAKIWAMA project funded by the European Union and aims to promote collaboration in integrated water resources management, biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, maritime safety, pollution control, and community development.

Signed by the LTA Executive Director, TUSANGA MUKANGA Sylvain, and LVBC Executive Secretary, Dr Masinde Bwire, the Memorandum underscores a shared commitment to regional cooperation and the sustainable management of freshwater resources for present and future generations.
