Dar Es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania | 7–9 October 2026
The Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA), in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GIZ, organized a regional workshop from 7 to 9 October 2026 in Dar es Salaam to technically review the Revised LTA Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the Protection of Biodiversity and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in Lake Tanganyika and its Basin and the Gender Mainstreaming Strategy.
The meeting brought together representatives from the four LTA member states—the Republic of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Zambia—as well as national experts, representatives of research institutions, civil society representatives, and technical and financial partners, notably GIZ, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and The Nature Conservancy (TNC).
The overall objective of the workshop was to present the draft revised and updated LTA SAP and the Lake Tanganyika Gender Mainstreaming Strategy to the LTA Technical Committee for technical validation.
During the workshop, participants reviewed both documents through technical presentations, Member State group discussions, and plenary sessions. The discussions resulted in several recommendations, particularly on improving performance indicators, defining baselines and measurable targets, strengthening monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and incorporating Member States’ priorities.
As a key outcome of the workshop, the Member States agreed to grant GOPA consultants four weeks to incorporate all comments, observations, and recommendations into the final versions of both documents. Furthermore, a comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Plan, including baseline values, measurable targets, and SMART indicators, will be developed with the support of UNOPS.
During the closing ceremony, Dr. LIWENGA Emma Teresa , Executive Director of the LTA, commended the active participation of the Member States and expressed her appreciation to GIZ, through the Tanganyika Kivu Water Management (TAKIWAMA) Project /EAC4Nature Programme, GOPA consultants Worldwide, and the other technical and financial partners for their support. She emphasized the importance of translating strategic priorities into concrete, measurable, and inclusive actions, while strengthening regional cooperation for the protection and sustainable management of Lake Tanganyika.
